Thailand's Ministry of Public Health set out plans to develop the country into a medical investment hub at the World Trade Organization (WTO) Public Forum in Geneva, Switzerland, on 16 September 2026. Dr Suppachok Wetchaphanphesat, the ministry's chief inspector-general, said the Thai delegation joined a panel titled "Wellness Without Borders: Powered by Medical Tourism" alongside representatives from China, Mexico and Malaysia.

The ministry's Medical Investment Hub strategy targets economic value equivalent to at least 0.5% of gross domestic product, and rests on three pillars: a Service Hub, a Research and Development Hub, and a Product and Health Manufacturing Hub. Dr Suppachok said the ministry also aims to lift Thailand's global competitiveness ranking in health and the environment from 56th place into the top 50. Under the Service Hub pillar, planned initiatives include an International Health Agency, Public Premium Flagship Hospitals, a Thailand Health Marketplace, and Data and Access work intended to connect information, travel, treatment and continuing care.

Dr Suppachok cited more than 60 Thai hospitals accredited by Joint Commission International (JCI) and more than 17,000 Thai massage, spa and wellness establishments nationwide as existing strengths. A 2024 survey by the Department of Health Service Support put medical treatment revenue at private hospitals serving foreign patients at approximately 50 billion baht, with Qatar, Kuwait and Oman identified as high-value Middle Eastern markets. Thailand's wellness economy was worth approximately US$42.7 billion in 2024, up 10.1% on 2023, according to Global Wellness Institute figures quoted by the ministry.

At the forum Thailand proposed three areas for the future of cross-border health services: improving standards, service quality and patient safety; strengthening links between visas, health insurance and patient referral systems; and using digital health and telemedicine while ensuring revenue and investment support the domestic health system, employment and workforce development. The direction echoes the World Bank Group's 2026 report Building Thailand's Future Today, which identifies sustainable and wellness tourism as one of five industries with potential to drive productivity, investment and high-quality employment in Thailand.
