Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan, in Nakhon Si Thammarat, is now on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The UNESCO World Heritage Centre records the property under dossier 1761 with a date of inscription of 2026, inscribed under cultural criteria (ii) and (vi), covering 5.356 hectares. The Tourism Authority of Thailand reports that the World Heritage Committee inscribed the property at its 48th session, held from 19 to 29 July 2026 in Busan, Republic of Korea, following a recommendation by the International Council on Monuments and Sites.
UNESCO describes the monastery as sitting in Peninsular Thailand on a narrow ridge between the Pacific and Indian oceans, where it has served as a major regional Buddhist centre since its founding in the eighth century. Its position on transoceanic trade routes brought in religious and architectural traditions from northeastern India, central Java, Sri Lanka and the Mon region of southern Myanmar — Brahmanism, Hinduism, Mahayana Buddhism and Theravada Buddhism among them — which were absorbed into the monastery's buildings, rituals and cultural practices.
What UNESCO recognises is not only the architecture but the continuity. Religious and local traditions have carried on at the site for more than 1,500 years, including the Nakhon Si Thammarat chronicle tradition, the annual cloth-wrapping ceremony for the Great Reliquary, and the Nora dance drama. Nora is itself already on UNESCO's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
According to TAT, the inscription brings Thailand's World Heritage portfolio to nine properties — six cultural and three natural. The cultural properties are the Historic City of Ayutthaya; the Historic Town of Sukhothai and Associated Historic Towns; the Ban Chiang Archaeological Site; the Ancient Town of Si Thep and its Associated Dvaravati Monuments; Phu Phrabat; and Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan. The natural properties are the Thungyai-Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuaries, the Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex and the Kaeng Krachan Forest Complex. Wat Phra Mahathat is southern Thailand's first World Heritage site.
