Founded in 1904 under royal patronage, The Siam Society is Thailand's longest-running cultural and scholarly organisation. Its founding objective, set out at its first council meeting, was "the investigation and encouragement of Art, Science and Literature in relation to Siam and neighbouring countries" - a mission it continues today under its motto, "Knowledge Gives Rise to Friendship."

The Society has occupied its Bangkok premises on Asoke Montri Road (Sukhumvit Soi 21) since 1933. The compound includes a specialist library holding rare books, palm-leaf manuscripts, and collections on the fine arts, humanities, and natural sciences of Thailand and the wider region; an auditorium used for lectures and cultural performances; and two traditional teakwood houses open to the public - Kamthieng House Museum, showcasing northern Thai (Lanna) ethnology, and Saeng Aroon House, an example of central Thai architecture.

Membership today spans more than 60 nationalities, and the Society welcomes non-members to its facilities and programmes, which include:

  • Weekly public lectures in English by scholars, authors, and specialists on Thai and regional history, archaeology, and culture
  • Study trips within Thailand and abroad led by academics and heritage experts
  • The Journal of the Siam Society and the Natural History Bulletin of the Siam Society, both published continuously since 1904
  • Cultural heritage conservation work through its Siamese Heritage Trust and the Southeast Asian Cultural Heritage Alliance (SEACHA)

For visitors and researchers interested in Thai culture, history, and heritage conservation, The Siam Society is one of the most established and accessible reference points in the country, and a natural stop for anyone building deeper cultural or academic ties with Thailand.
